Pavia is a town of Lombardia, capital of the homonymous province. Located on the river Ticino, a little north of the confluence in Po, 35 km south of Milan. The foundation dates back to Roman times with the name of Ticinum.

It was the Lombard capital of the kingdom. From the Middle Ages is home to one of the oldest universities in Italy. The town was fortified until 1872, when the ramparts were turned into avenues and public gardens; most of the walls, however, survived until 1901, when it was demolished for the construction of bypass roads.

City of ancient origins, it offers several ideas for culture and tourism. In particular, to visit, among others, the Museum located in the Castello Visconteo, San Pietro in Ciel D’Oro, Pinacoteca Malaspina, the Dome, San Michele Maggiore, San Teodoro and the famous Ponte Coperto on Ticino river and Palazzo Bottigella. Few kilometers from the city there is Certosa di Pavia.

Pavia is the capital of a productive province devoted mainly to agriculture (production of wine, rice and cereals). There are few industries; the main activities of the city are the University and the Policlinico San Matteo.

Pavia is one of the important milestones on the path Francigena, a journey of pilgrimage to Rome.
