Certosa di Pavia is a monastery, situated about 8 km north of Pavia, dated from the fourteenth century. It represents one of the most important monuments late-Gothic Italian. The original location of the monastery was on the edge of the park in the northen part of the Visconteo Castle; of that park now remains only a few parts (Vernavola, north of Pavia) no more linked to the castle and Certosa.
The built of the Certosa di Pavia was wanted by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, who began works on August 27 1396, placing the foundation stone of the yard. The location was strategically midway between Milan, the capital of the duchy, and Pavia, the second most important city, where the duke growned and where the court was established, in the beautiful Castello Visconteo.
The place chosen for the foundation was a forest in the extreme north of the Visconteo Park, a huge outdoor enclosure which connected the castle with a wooded area used for hunting of the Lords of the Lombardia.
